Nothing I do can earn me anything of lasting value. By acting a certain way I am no more acceptable than those who do not (since the heart of the matter is the heart). Something is only good if it is done for a good purpose, that is: according to the purpose of God, who alone is good. God alone changes hearts. The only way to be accepted by God is to be accepted by God (that is: according to His own will, not from obligation). Since He doesn’t need anything and we never do anything from a perfectly pure motive, we cannot earn His acceptance no matter how much we may impress fellow humans. As one whom God chose to save for his own good purpose (and not by anything I did or do now), I know any success which might be attributed to me must be credited to God. To Him I owe my life (both spiritual and physical). Regardless of sickness or health, poverty or prosperity, my Savior reigns. I have been redeemed. Praise God!
